Books for people who take books seriously and don't take themselves too seriously.
An independent bookshop in Edinburgh's Stockbridge neighbourhood. Opened in 2019, around 4,000 hand-curated titles — selected for quality, not commercial appeal.
About the Shop
Nora Sutherland opened The Folded Page in March 2019 in a former ironmonger's premises on Raeburn Place, Stockbridge. The shop stocks around 4,000 titles, selected for quality and interest rather than commercial appeal or publisher relationships.
The team is Nora, Alasdair (who handles events and is responsible for the poetry section being better than it has any right to be), Marta (fiction and translated literature), and Bewick the cat (no defined responsibilities; inconsistent attendance).
The shop's philosophy is curation over comprehensiveness. Every title on the shelves is there because someone on the team read it, or read enough of it to be confident recommending it.
We'd rather stock 4,000 books we believe in than 40,000 we don't.
Author Events
We host around 20 events a year in the back room — readings, conversations, the occasional argument. The room holds about 40 people, which keeps things from becoming a lecture.
Most are free. Some are £5 on the door, usually when there's wine involved. There is no booking system. Send us an email and we'll confirm your place.
Book Club
Meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm. Membership is £5 a month, which covers a copy of the book if you don't already own one. We pick the books ourselves — no votes, no themes, no celebrity endorsements.
We are currently at capacity. A waitlist exists and does move. If you'd like to be added, get in touch.
